Drivers are stuck in five miles of traffic after police closed the A127 following a crash.
Motorists have been in the congestion for up to an hour after officers shut the route at around 12pm.
It is believed there has been at least one vehicle involved in an accident, travelling on the A127 eastbound, between A129 Rayleigh Road, and Bellhouse Lane.
Photos show cars in standstill traffic as motorists describe ‘people turning round and going back down the carriageway’ to avoid the queues this afternoon (Wednesday, January 9).
It is believed drivers are being diverted off the eastbound direction via the slip roads by the crash, but there is still five miles of queues along the road.
The westbound direction is travelling smoothly , although there is some congestion on the A129 in both directions, which may be due to vehicles attempting to get on to the A127.
Essex Travel News tweeted: “A127 Eastbound, accident involving one vehicle at the junction of the A127 and The Fairway.
“Police have closed the A127 at the Rayleigh Weir Interchange.”
Photos from the scene show motorists being diverted off the A127 via slip roads at the junction.
