Drivers faced long delays this morning (March 7) after an accident on the M25 involving a lorry.

The HGV left the carriageway near junction 5 and landed across a barrier around 2am.

The M25 was closed for 12 hours while specialist recovery takes place, but reopened around 2pm.

The lorry also damaged a bridge over the M26 during the crash and this road was also closed as a result.

Traffic was left queuing while recovery work took place and congestion stretched right back to junction 4 (Orpington).

There were four miles of queues on the M26 westbound carriageway, traffic was heavy on the A21 and there were delays on the A224 Orpington bypass as traffic sought alternative routes.

Anticlockwise traffic was unable to leave the M25 for the M26 Eastbound or the A21.
