RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ7) — Virginia State Police are warning drivers that road conditions can look deceptively safe in winter weather, but icy conditions can still exist.
VSP troopers are still assisting stuck motorists and dealing with traffic accidents across the region, and they are still advising motorists to delay travel until VDOT crews have had more time to clear roadways.
Since 12 a.m. Sunday, state police have responded to more than 230 traffic crashes and assisted 117 disabled/stuck motorists statewide, according to a release from VSP. The majority of crashes have involved only damaged vehicles.
The Salem division has reported nine traffic accidents and 11 disabled vehicles, the release stated. The Wytheville division reported seven accidents and two disabled vehicles.
There have been three traffic fatalities statewide since Saturday, including one on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County in which three tractor-trailers were involved. Ronald W. Harris, 73, of Gainesville, GA, was killed in the crash.
Authorities reminded drivers to call 511 or visit www.511virginia.org for updated road conditions.
