There has been a serious crash on the M5 this morning (January 13), which has left a woman badly injured.
All traffic has been held on the southbound carriageway following a collision between a car and a lorry.
The incident took place shortly before 6am between junctions 28 and 29, Devon Live reports.
According to traffic monitoring system Inrix, traffic is queuing as far back as Junction 27 – causing severe delays to some commuters travelling south from Bristol.
There is heavy traffic which is not expected to return to normal until midday, according to Traffic England.
Trapped traffic was sent back the wrong way along the M5, with cars and lorries diverted through Cullompton and Broadclyst.
A statement on Inrix says: “Stationary traffic due to all traffic being temporarily held and accident, a lorry and a car involved on M5 Southbound between J28 A373 Station Road (Cullompton / Service Area) and J29 A3015 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton).
“Cameras show all traffic is being held.”
